Sudan, UN Discuss Coordinating Efforts Towards Transitional Period

Sudanese authorities have discussed with the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) coordinating efforts to ensure the success of the transitional period and the democratic path in the country.

The discussions held during the course of two separate meetings held by the head of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan (STC) Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and STC member, Yasser Al-Atta, with the head of the UNITAMS mission, Volker Perthes.

The statement indicated that Al-Burhan discussed with Volker the process of coordinating efforts between the Sudanese government and the UN mission for the success of the transitional period and the democratic transition.

In another meeting with STC member, the statement explained that Yasser Al-Atta, Perthes discussed “the role played by the UN mission to support the government and implement its tasks, most importantly the mission of mitigating comprehensive peace, security, and stability, safeguarding human rights, protecting civilians, and mobilising regional and international financial institutions to achieve these goals,”

On 21 August 2019, a 53-month transitional phase began in Sudan that would end with holding elections in early 2024.
