A prominent Sudanese politician and former cabinet minister Khalid Omer Yousif who was detained by the military following last year’s coup has been released on bail.
Yousif was a member of a task group that seized property and sacked bureaucrats associated to Omar al-Bashir, the former President of Sudan. Two other members of the task force remain in custody.
It should be recalled that in February, two prominent Sudanese political figures who held top positions in the civilian administration before a military takeover in October were arrested.
Their detention marked an extension of a crackdown on critics of the military and follow those of dozens of activists linked to a protest movement against the October 25 coup.
The two officials detained, Khalid Omer Yousif and Wagdi Salih, had previously been involved in a task force that seized property and fired bureaucrats linked to the regime of Omar al-Bashir.
Yousif also served as a cabinet minister in a civilian government under a power-sharing agreement between the military and the FFC.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s military chief, has begun restoring Bashir loyalists who were fired after the previous president was deposed in 2019.
There have been numerous rallies against the coup, which have been violently suppressed.
Three weeks ago, another protester was killed during anti-coup demonstrations in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital.
Hundreds of Sudanese have been killed in a crackdown on mass protests since army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan led a military coup on October 25, according to a toll kept by this committee. The military power grab drew wide international condemnation and upended a transition to civilian rule that had followed the 2019 ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir.
