Sudan’s Al-Burhan Visits South Sudan for Peace Talks with President Kiir

Sudan's Al-Burhan Visits South Sudan for Peace Talks with President Kiir

Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has landed in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, for high-level talks with South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir Mayardit.

South Sudan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ramadan Abdalla Mohammed Goc, stated that the discussions will centre on fostering regional peace and stability through meaningful dialogue and cooperation between the two nations.

“The two leaders are set to address pressing issues impacting both countries,” Goc informed journalists upon Al-Burhan’s arrival at Juba International Airport.

Fighting first erupted in Khartoum on 15 April 2023, between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and the conflict has since spread across various regions of Sudan.

Meanwhile, South Sudan’s border town, Renk, remains a vital point of entry for those escaping the violence. Over 745,000 people have crossed the border since the fighting began, with more than half a million of these being South Sudanese returning to the safety they once sought in Sudan when their own country was in turmoil.
