Sudan‘s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has appointed new heads for 30 public universities. This comes after his decree dissolving the boards of trustees of the government-run universities.

He has been ruling by decree since he ousted the transitional government led by civilian Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok in October 2021.

Reports say heads of universities including Professors at Sudan University have said that they will go on strike in protest of the decision.

Gen Burhan’s judgments were also described as illegitimate by the head of the University of Khartoum.

Protests against the military leadership have been aided by educational institutions.

Authorities in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, fired 13 education ministry personnel last week, accusing them of breaching guidelines issued after the coup to keep educational problems distinct from political issues.
