Sudan's RSF Commander Hemedti Engages in Talks with Kenya's Ruto Over East African Conflict

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), also known as Hemedti, recently held discussions with Kenya’s President William Ruto to address the ongoing conflict in the East African state.

Hemedti shared on the social platform X that during the talks, he outlined his vision for halting the war and initiating negotiations with the Sudanese army to seek a resolution to the conflict.

In recent diplomatic efforts, Hemedti has been engaging with regional leaders, including Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in a bid to gain a political advantage over his rival army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Additionally, Hemedti has conducted talks with Sudan’s former Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, where he pledged to release hundreds of prisoners and establish humanitarian corridors to facilitate aid delivery to conflict-affected areas.

Hemedti and Gen. Burhan seized power jointly in a coup in 2021, disrupting Sudan’s democratic transition under Mr. Hamdok. Their fallout in the subsequent year led to a civil war, causing numerous casualties and displacing millions.

The RSF, under Hemedti’s control, holds significant sway over the capital Khartoum, the city of Wad Madani, and large parts of the western Darfur region.
