Suicide Bomber Kills Four in Somalia

A suicide bomber on Saturday killed four people at the construction site of a Turkish company in Somalia, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Four others were also injured in the attack which occurred on a road between the Somali capital Mogadishu and the town of Afgooye.

The construction firm had been working on the road.

One of the deceased and all four of the wounded people were Turkish citizens, the statement added.

The statement read: “We are saddened to receive the news that this morning a terrorist attack with a bomb-laden vehicle against a Turkish company in Somalia has resulted in the loss of 4 people, including a Turkish citizen. We are closely following the medical status of 4 Turkish citizens who were injured in the attack.

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack targeting the employees of a Turkish company that undertook the Mogadishu-Afgoye road construction and contributes to the development and prosperity of Somalia. We wish speedy recovery to the injured, emphasize once again that we stand by the friendly and brotherly people and Government of Somalia.”

Extremist militia, Al Shabaab, has claimed the attack, saying they targeted “white officers” on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

The Turkish government has been involved in humanitarian projects and relief efforts in Somalia. It has operated a large military base in its capital since 2017.

Turkish military personnel and civilians have been targeted in Somalia by extremists before. In January 2020, Turkish-run construction site was targeted in another suicide bombing and three people died, with another 20 injured.
