Super Eagles’ Goalkeeper Nwabali Returns to Training Ahead of Crucial AFCON Clash

Super Eagles' Goalkeeper Nwabali Returns to Training Ahead of Crucial AFCON Clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have received a significant lift in preparation for their pivotal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal showdown against Angola, as goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is back in training.

Doubts loomed over Nwabali’s availability for the upcoming match following an injury sustained during the round-of-16 encounter against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Nigeria’s head coach, Jose Peseiro, shared an optimistic update on the status of the Super Eagles’ shot-stopper. Peseiro remains hopeful about the shotstopper’s fitness and indicated that a late fitness test on Thursday will determine his readiness for the match.

“We have to wait for a late fitness test today (Thursday); if he is not ready, I have other goalkeepers (Uzoho and Ojo),”  Peseiro stated. “I believe and trust all my goalkeepers, if Nwabali is not test fit for the match ahead, I trust Uzoho.”

A recent video from NFF TV showcased Nwabali actively participating in training, signalling his commitment to regaining full fitness for the crucial clash against Angola.

Medical examinations by Nigerian doctors and a scan in Ivory Coast have revealed that Nwabali’s injury is not as severe as initially feared.

Nwabali’s return is anticipated to bolster the confidence of the Super Eagles, particularly given his key role in the team’s defensive record of conceding just one goal in four matches. His leadership qualities and on-field presence are deemed crucial for the Nigerian squad.

With the aim of securing a spot in the semifinals through a victory against Angola, the goalkeeper’s availability is seen as a positive development that enhances the team’s chances in the upcoming encounter.
