The Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on Friday, apprehended a suspect for vandalising LED road stud lights on the newly renovated Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.
The suspect, Mubarak Abdullahi aged 18, a resident of Makoko, was arrested around 10:00 a.m. while removing the LED road stud lights which are installed to improve the visibility for road users.
Operatives of the RRS patrolling the bridge, caught Abdullahi in the act with 10 of the LED lights already removed.
The RRS Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, had deployed bike riders on 24-hour security patrol in the area several weeks ago to monitor traffic and infrastructure on the bridge.
Recall that in May 2024, the Lagos State Government issued a stern warning to vandals, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on such activities on public property.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, addressed this issue while discussing the arrest of a suspected vandal, Abba Mohammed (24), who was caught vandalising and stealing iron from concrete barriers constructed by the State Government at System 1 Odo Iya Alaro main stream, Opebi Link Bridge.
“Over the years, the theft and vandalism of government properties, particularly valuable and profitable public infrastructure, have become targets for these individuals, a situation we can no longer condone,” Wahab stated.
