A heavy snowstorm hit eastern Sweden on Saturday, causing two large traffic accidents involving dozens of vehicles and requiring more than 100 hospitalisations, according to officials.
Local media sites broadcast footage of scores of cars and trucks colliding, many of which were heavily damaged and blanketed in snow.
The country’s emergency information office issued a brief warning that the incidents were “putting a significant strain on the healthcare system” in the Uppsala region, and the local administration declared an emergency.

By the evening, regional health director Mikael Kohler told AFP that hospitals had begun to regain control.
“A total of 106 people have been taken to the hospital for treatment following the accident on the E18,” he said, referring to the road where officials reported 95 vehicles colliding.
Kohler confirmed that two of the injured were in intensive care on Saturday evening.
A police spokesperson told public broadcaster SVT that it was similar to “a dystopian film scene.”
On its website, the Swedish Transport Administration urged people not to travel on Uppsala County routes.
