Swiss airspace has been forced to close following a technical glitch that affected the country’s air navigation service provider Skyguide.

Skyguide says, due to some “technical malfunction” experienced, the airspace has been closed for safety reasons.

Both the Zurich and Geneva flight information regions have “zero rate” regulations imposed owing to “system failure”.

High delays should be expected. The malfunction occurred in the early hours of June 15 and will remain until further notice.

Swiss says its inbound long-haul flights are being diverted to airports in neighbouring countries, including Milan, Vienna and Lyon.

“[We regret] this incident and its consequences for its customers, partners and passengers at Geneva and Zurich airports, and [Skyguide is] working to find a solution.”

“Short-haul flights are currently not taking off,” it adds, stating that it is “monitoring the situation closely”.

“Swiss is committed to finding solutions for the passengers affected by this challenging situation,” it says.

There’s no further clarification as to when the Zurich airport’s operator will resume operations.
