Ruling party candidate, general Evariste Ndayishimiye has suggested voters not fear the coronavirus, saying “God loves Burundi and if there are people who have tested positive, it is so that God may manifest his power in Burundi.”
The announcement comes just days before Burundians go to the polls on May 20 to choose a new president, parliamentarians and local officials.
Ndayishimiye, 52, also heads the department of military affairs in the president’s office and has served as minister of interior and security.
