The Tanzanian government has prohibited the use of 16 titles from a famous children’s book series, Wimpy Kid in schools for purportedly advocating LGBTQ rights.
According to authorities, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series violates the country’s traditions, customs, and cultures.
According to Education Minister Adolf Mkenda, the publications endanger children’s education.
Schools that use the texts will risk disciplinary and legal action, including having their registration revoked, according to the authorities.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series’ prohibited books include: Rodrick Rules, The Last Straw, The Ugly Truth, Cabin Fever, The Third Wheel, Hard Luck, The Long Haul, Old School, Double Down, and The Gateway.
“This is the first list, after we checked and verified that these books violate traditions and customs. The content in them are not good for the upbringing of Tanzanians. The review is ongoing,” Prof. Mkenda stated.
He asked parents to check their children’s baggage on a frequent basis to ensure the books are not being used.
