Tundu Lissu, Tanzania’s opposition leader has called for sanctions against President John Magufuli.
Lissu, who contested against Magufuli in the Tanzanian Presidential election has fled to Belgium. He claimed he left the country due to threats to his life by the Magufuli regime.
The 52-year old Lissu in tweets on Monday said the Magufuli government should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity, and said his government does not deserve foreign support.
“What we have just seen with the debate in the Foreign Affairs Committee of @Europarl_EN @davidmcallister is just the beginning. More is yet to come, with filings in @IntlCrimCourt, congressional hearings in the US and actions in bilateral and multilateral institutions.”
Lissu won just 13% of the votes in Tanzania’s Presidential election held in late October as incumbent Magufuli earned a landslide victory against the lawyer.
The Chadema candidate has since claimed the elections were not free and fair and has filed charges against the President.
