Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been named on Forbes’ list of world’s most powerful women in 2021.
Forbes announced its 18th annual ranking of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, with a robust array of iconic entrepreneurs, foremost CEOs, business moguls,heads of government, trailblazing philanthropists and policy makers solving some of society’s challenging problems.
The list is broken into six categories including Business, Finance, Media & Entertainment, Philanthropy, Politics & Policy and Technology.
Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott tops the list this year.
Scott is the world’s third richest woman in the world, and her determination to donate her wealth in a meaningful and impactful way puts her above the competition.
At second place is US vice president Kamala Harris, she has moved up one spot upwards, swapping positions with Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank who is in the third spot.
While the people on the 18th annual list of the World’s 100 ‘Most Powerful Women’ come from 30 countries and territories and work across finance, technology, politics, philanthropy, entertainment and more, they are said to be united by a sense of duty.
According to the editor, Maggie McGrath, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been instrumental in implementing Covid protocols in Tanzania.
In part, the statement reads:
“All of these women represent the driving thesis behind the compilation of the list: it’s not just enough to have money, or a position of power. A person must be doing something with their fortune, voice or public platform.”
Occupying 91 on the list is Nigeria’s two term former minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a developmental professional, global economist, first woman and first African DG of the World Trade Organisation(WTO).
Also on the enviable list is Nigeria’s media mogul, Mo Abudu who is one of the most powerful women in global media.
Ever outspoken President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen, who has remained a vanguard of freedom and democracy in the face of increased pressure from China vaulted her 28 spots to number Nine.
The honourees on the 2021 list includes 14 Billionaires with combined wealth of $167 billion and they control or influence $3.3 Trillion in revenues.
