Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will launch its first segment this month, connecting Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.
The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) states that the project is almost complete, with the Morogoro-Dodoma section approaching completion at 82.2 percent with a December 2022 completion date.
Electric trains are planned to be used in the initial phase, according to TRC.
According to TRC Director-General Masanja Kadogosa, the Tanzanian government has so far released $261 million out of a total of $1.9 billion for the project’s construction.
Tanzania and Burundi agreed to build a 282-kilometer Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Uvinza in Tanzania’s Kigoma area to Gitega in Burundi in January of this year. Tanzania will construct 156 kilometres of the SGR, while Burundi will construct 126 kilometres.
Both nations have already begun looking for funding to complete the project, which is expected to cost less than $900 million.
The SGR project aims to connect the Dar es Salaam port to Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which are all landlocked (DRC).
