Tanzania’s Suluhu Hassan’s Kenya Visit to Patch Up Trade Ties

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s two-day Kenya visit aims at strengthening ties between the two East African neighbours after years of feud.

President Hassan was received by two ministers on her arrival in Nairobi before heading to the Presidency. She became her country’s and East Africa’s first female President in early April after Magufuli’s sudden death.

Tanzania a close ally of Kenya in the East African Community (EAC) has distanced itself in recent years from the regional bloc under President John Magufuli, a period of growing economic rivalry and accusations of unfair trade practices between the two countries.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta while welcoming the President in a joint statement remarked that her visit has given Kenya an opportunity to renew our relationship.”

He added that Kenya would work with Tanzania to ensure that unity between the two countries “continues to grow and is strengthened for the benefit of our people.”

The two Presidents announced the signing of an agreement to transport liquefied petroleum gas from the Kenyan port of Mombasa to the Tanzanian economic capital Dar es Salaam.

Ministers from both countries will also hold talks on improving trade relations between the two countries.
