Nigeria’s telecom operators have announced they are developing new tariff pricing structures to align with the 50 per cent increase sanctioned by the Nigerian government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Although the NCC indicated that the 50 per cent tariff increase approved for the operators on January 20, 2025, should take effect in February, the service providers said they would fully implement the new prices starting in March.
During a recent meeting with journalists and other stakeholders in Lagos, the operators explained that the increase was necessary to sustain the industry, emphasising that this was not merely about their profitability.
In response, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have organised a protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, aimed at urging a reduction of the 50 per cent increase to approximately five per cent.

Leading the dialogue among telecom companies, Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), said that the operators would announce their new tariffs individually and are currently in the process of filing, reviewing, and securing approvals from the regulatory body.
“So, we are now following what is called the regulatory requirement, regulatory steps of filing, reviewing and obtaining approvals. As soon as those approvals come through, different players will introduce new rates as the time comes. I’ll say over next week, we start seeing some improvement in the prices,” he stated.
Adebayo underscored the importance of the tariff adjustment for the telecommunications sector’s survival, insisting that the government should not depend on this sector to subsidise others.
