MTN Nigeria has increased the price of its 15GB weekly data plan to N6,000, up from N2,000.
This price hike has upset many users across the country. The increase is part of a wider 50% rise in telecommunications service fees, which was approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) due to current market conditions.
The company confirmed the change, stating it was made to improve services for its customers.
“Y’ello! Apologies for the delayed response and the issue experienced. Kindly be informed that there has been a recent adjustment in our tariff plans to enhance our services, hence the recent prize changes seen on the App. All inconveniences regretted,” the company wrote on X.
The new pricing structure has seen a substantial rise in other data bundles as well. For example, the 1.5TB plan has jumped from N150,000 to N240,000, and the 600GB plan now costs N120,000, up from N75,000.
Subscribers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new prices, especially in light of Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties. Many took to social media to voice their concerns, with some calling for a boycott of the company due to the high costs.
“I think it’s high time we boycotted MTN. Their network is terrible, and their data plans are a rip-off. the 15GB package doesn’t even last three days. During the protest, they deliberately sabotaged their own network to prevent it from happening,” an X user, Khan, wrote.
This price increase follows an approval by the NCC, which also allowed for similar hikes across the telecom sector.
Although Airtel and Globacom have not yet raised their prices, experts predict they will soon follow MTN’s lead.
