Tems Makes History As She Pips Fireboy, Others To BET Award 

Nigerian singer, Temilade “Tems” Openiyi has become the first African woman to win the Best International Act award at the BET.

Tems came to bigger prominence when she was featured on Wizkid’s global hit single Essence.

Essence also had Justin Bieber on it and it was the biggest summer song of the last year.

Tems defeated one full Nigerian,Fireboy and two British-Nigerians, Dave and Little Simz who are UK artistes to win the award. 

Other nominees were Fally Ipupa, Major League DJz, Ludmilla and Tayc.

“Thank you so much for this, thank you so much,” the excited Tems said on receiving her award.

“It’s an honour… I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home.

“Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.”
