Both Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, who is better known by his stage name Wizkid, and Temilade Opaniyi, who is better known by her stage name Tems, are Nigerian musicians whose works have been praised around the world. Both of these performers received two awards at the 2022 American Music Awards, which helped to refocus international attention on Nigeria (AMAs).

The American Music Awards presented Wizkid with the award for Favorite Afrobeats Musician of the Year for the very first time. This achievement cemented Wizkid’s place as a pioneer in the Afrobeats music scene. He triumphed over the competition, which included Burna Boy, CKay, Tems, and Fireboy.

Despite the fact that “Break My Soul” by Beyoncé, “Hrs And Hrs” by Muni Long, “Smokin’ Out The Window” by Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak), and “I Hate U” by SZA all got Tems’ assistance, “Essence” won the prize for favourite R&B song.

Although Wizkid had previously received three nominations for the American Music Awards (AMAs), this will be his very first award win.

Because of her contribution to Future’s “Wait For You,” which also featured Drake, Tems was also recognized as the collective winner of the “Favorite Hip Hop Song” category. The well-known pair Wizkid and Tems also took home the award for “Favorite R&B Song” for their collaboration “Essence,” which was included in Wizkid’s 2020 album “Made in Lagos.”

The 50th annual American Music Awards were held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on November 20, 2022. Wayne Brady served as the show’s host for the evening.

The American Music Awards are widely considered to be the most prestigious awards event, determined by votes cast by music fans.
