At least ten people died and five others were injured after a mine collapsed in southwest Zambia, authorities report.
The incident occurred on Monday in the Mumbwa district.
“During the course of their mining activities, the earth collapsed on them”, central police commissioner Charity Munganga Chanda said in a statement.
Six people were removed from the rubble, but one of them later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The Zambian police said they are investigating the cause of the accident and working to confirm the number of people involved.
Reports from local media indicated that it was a gold mine.
Zambia has numerous mines, and deadly accidents happen often. In August, eight individuals lost their lives in a gravel mine collapse located to the east of the capital, Lusaka.
