Ten Die in D.R. Congo Intercommunal Clashes

At least ten people have been reported dead and thirty-four declared injured after inter-communal clashes emanated from local protests in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Locals in the eastern Congo communities of Kumu and Nande had protested the UN Peacekeeping mission in the region as they expressed their displeasure with the state of security of the region where at least 300 people have been killed since the beginning of the year.

The local protesters took up arms, leading to bloody fights between the two communities, amid attacks by the armed militias.

Governor of North Kivu Province, the most affected region by the devastation of the local militia group, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita said on Monday that every form of protest must be stopped.

Protesters are unhappy about the continuous existence of violent attacks against residents of Beni City, by members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan militant group operating in Eastern Congo.

Despite the presence of more than 12,000 members of the UN Peacekeeping Mission, not much has improved in security in the east of the country.
