The recently fired defence minister in South Sudan Angelina Teny has been named the new interior minister by Sudanese President Salva Kiir.
Teny is the spouse of Riek Machar, the head of the opposition and the nation’s vice president in the unity government established after 2018 to put an end to the violent six-year civil war.
The shaky peace agreement between the president and his adversary, Machar was in danger of being destroyed after she was fired earlier this year, which provoked a protest from the opposition.
According to the rules of the agreement, a member of Machar’s SPLM-IO party should receive the defense minister.
The selection of Ms. Teny to the cabinet was announced on Tuesday night in a presidential order that was read aloud on the national channel. The SPLM-IO has not yet responded.
The country will hold its first election following its 12-year separation from Sudan as a result of the peace agreement. Election day is set for December 2024.
