Gunmen tragically killed four police officers and a Point of Sale (PoS) operator on Monday evening in the Onitsha Road area of Owerri, Imo State. The gunmen reportedly ambushed and opened fire at the Irete axis of the Owerri-Onitsha expressway.
Imo State Police spokesman Henry Okoye confirmed the incident, adding that the police were on the trail of the assailants
He said: “For now, four police officers have been confirmed dead. Investigation is ongoing to unravel the miscreants responsible for the senseless attack.”
Okoye disclosed that the Commissioner of Police “has deployed the command’s Tactical Units with the available operational assets and intelligence to go all out in synergy with other security agencies and hunt down the hoodlums responsible for the attack.”
He said that the bodies of the deceased had been removed and transferred to the mortuary, while the injured individual was quickly taken to a nearby hospital where he is receiving care.
He called on the general public, particularly the residents of Ogbakwu, who may have any information that will aid in apprehending the assailants, to report it to the nearest police station.
This incident comes just months after two policemen were killed in an ambush in the Okigwe region of the state in March.
