Five of the seventy-three students of the Government Day Secondary School, abducted in Kaya town, Zamfara State on Wednesday have been freed by the terrorists who took them away.
The students according to a former Councillor of the Kaya ward, Yahaya Kaya, were returned around 1 a.m on Thursday. He said his daughter, Amina was among the students freed by the terrorists.
Kaya said the released students returned in good health, barely a day after their abduction.
The Police, confirmed the abduction on Wednesday, as it happened around 11 a.m while classes were being held.
The Zamfara state government had recently imposed bans on various economic activities in a bid to check criminal gangs, kidnapping and cattle rustling in the state.
The abduction wasn’t the first of its kind in Zamfara, with eighteen students of the College of Agriculture in the state regaining freedom from abductors just less than a week ago.
Kidnap-for-ransom has become a growing business of the daredevil in Nigeria’s North West with more than 1,000 students abducted since December 2020. Some of these students died in the custody of their abductors while many others have been released, mostly after paying millions of naira in ransom.
