1. Egypt’s Salah scores screamer to lift Liverpool back to the top of the EPL
Reigning African Footballer of The Year Mohammed Salah scored a contender for Goal of The Season as Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield to move back to the top of the English Premier League after Manchester City had briefly gone top with a 3-1 at Crystal Palace. Sadio Mané had headed in the opener in the 51st minute before Salah fired a rocket into the top corner two minutes later.
2. CAF U17 AFCON begins with Nigeria’s exciting 5-4 win over hosts Tanzania
The 2019 CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations began in Tanzania on Sunday. In the opening match five time world champions Nigeria edged the hosts 5-4 in an enthralling nine goal cliffhanger. In the other Group A match, Angola defeated ten-man Uganda 1-0.
3. Ethiopia’s Milaw and Burka dominate Paris marathon
Ethiopian duo Abrha Milaw and Gelete Burka won the 43rd edition of the Paris Marathon on Sunday which had a record 60,000 participants. Milaw won the men’s race with a time of 2:07:50, while Burka was the fastest woman with 2:22:48. Kenyan Paul Lonyangata, a two-time Paris Marathon winner, came third.
4. Semi-finalists for CAF club competitions emerge
Mamelodi Sundowns lost 1-0 to Al Ahly in Alexandria but progressed to the semi finals of the CAF Champions League 5-1 on aggregate. They will face Wydad Casablanca who eliminated Horoya 5-0 on aggregate. The other semi final will be contested by TP Mazembe and Esperance after they eliminated Simba and CS Constantine respectively.
In the CAF Confederations Cup RS Berkane will face CS Sfaxien in one of the semi-final games, while Zamalek will face the winner of the suspended quarter final clash between Tunisia’s Etoile Sahel and Sudan’s Al Hilal.
5. Nigeria-born Israel Adesanya captures UFC interim Middleweight title
Nigeria-born Israel Adesanya captured the UFC interim middleweight title after an epic win over Kelvin Gastelum. Adesanya knocked down Gastelum three times in the final round to claim a thrilling unanimous decision 48-46 on all three judges scorecards.
