The Mummies’ Magnificent March Through Cairo

The mummies of 22 ancient Egyptian pharaohs including Egypt’s most powerful ancient queen were yesterday wheeled through the streets of Cairo to a new “Resting Place”

They include the mummies of King Amenhotep I, who reigned from 1526BC, Queen Hatshepsut, the most powerful female pharaoh, and Tutankhamun’s father Akhenaten.

The mummies, up to 3,500 years old, were placed in special capsules filled with nitrogen and carried on cradles for stability.

They will eventually be put on display at the recently completed National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation about four miles from their old home.

Pedestrians and vehicles were barred from Tahrir Square, site of the current museum, and other sections of the route.
