Nollywood actress and TV host Omotunde Adebowale David, popularly known as Lolo 1, has criticised the Nigerian Government over it’s disrespect for its citizens, adding that the government must be more transparent in its dealings.
Lolo1 stated this on News Central TV’s Jasiri, without mincing words. She highlighted the numerous times the Nigerian Government has blatantly disregarded scrutiny and accountability on all counts.
She said, “PR is so big in Government because they need to focus on it. If you’re going to be doing bad things, you need people who will sell it to the people (Citizens) and not make it look that bad because it’s possible to do it.”
Lolo1 highlighted instances where the Government played on masses’ intelligence, such as when Nigerians were told animals swallowed monies that were not accounted for.
In 2013, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) failed to provide documentation accounting for the disbursement of N17.16 billion. The agency’s management claimed that termites had destroyed numerous payment slips.
In June 2019, a finance officer at Kano Zoological Gardens informed a local radio station, Freedom Radio, that N6.8 million had been stolen and consumed by a gorilla inside their office.
In February 2018, Senator Shehu Sani disclosed to journalists that N70m, which belonged to the Northern Senators Forum, was allegedly eaten by monkeys at Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s farm. According to Senator Sani, funds received from the 7th Assembly went missing during Adamu’s administration, and he was held responsible for mishandling N70m during the establishment of the 8th Assembly.
Also, in February 2018, it was reported that a snake had sneaked into the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) office in Nigeria and swallowed N36 million. This incident was revealed by a sales clerk, Philomina Chieshe, during an audit after the ban on the use of scratch cards by JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.
She urged Nigerians to insist on government accountability, adding that for Nigeria to experience change, everyone must be ready to initiate change in their respective areas.
