Weighing in on President Bola Tinubu’s speech on Sunday, August 4, 2024, the Lagos State Labour Party flagbearer at the 2023 general elections, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has expressed reservations over the President’s address to the nation.

He said, “The President’s speech was extremely disappointing, and I’ll tell you why. It was disappointing because this government had about a month’s notice to prepare a response or feel the pulse of the people.”

He remarked that the protest had been brewing because Nigerians have been vocal about the difficulties they are facing. Referring to the recent protests in Kenya, Rhodes-Vivour noted that President Tinubu had the opportunity to learn from Kenya’s experience and the measures President William Ruto had implemented to tackle the nation’s urgent needs.

He criticised President Tinubu for lacking empathy in his speech, suggesting it was filled with propaganda and almost implied that Nigerians’ genuine concerns were politically motivated. Rhodes-Vivour also pointed out that Tinubu failed to address how the government would reduce its expenditures or outline how public funds would be managed in the future.
