A tragic seaplane crash off Western Australia’s Rottnest Island has claimed the lives of three people, including European tourists, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The accident occurred Tuesday evening shortly after the plane departed Rottnest, a popular destination known for its quokka population. Among the deceased were a 65-year-old Swiss woman, a 60-year-old Danish man, and the 34-year-old Australian pilot. Four others survived, including a Swiss man, a Danish woman, and an Australian couple, all of whom were rescued from the wreckage.
Western Australia Premier Roger Cook described the crash as a heartbreaking incident witnessed by many tourists, including families enjoying the summer holiday. Initial reports suggested the plane may have hit a rock during takeoff, though the cause remains under investigation.
Rottnest Island, located 30 kilometres from Perth, is a renowned tourist hotspot. The crash has cast a shadow over the otherwise idyllic setting, sparking widespread condolences.
