Authorities in Kenya say at least three persons have been killed following floods caused by prolonged heavy downpour in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The nonstop rains have been witnessed across all 17 subcounties. One of the victims was a police officer who was rescuing trapped families in the Kamukunji area, local media reported.
Videos on social media showed stranded motorists in their vehicles as the floodwaters swamped various roads.
Parts of the Nairobi Expressway, linking the country’s main airport to the capital, were also flooded.
The Kenya Red Cross has advised motorists and pedestrians to leave roads immediately if they sense impending danger. Weather experts expect more rains over the next few days.
In a statement, the humanitarian agency appealed to avoid parking their vehicles or conducting activities near streams or rivers when it is raining heavily.
“With rains pounding in various parts of Nairobi County, it is crucial to know how to protect yourself and your loved ones from potential flooding hazards. Evacuate Immediately to elevated areas in case of flooding because just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down,” read a statement from the society.
The National Police Service launched a search and recovery operation for a police officer who was swept away by floods last night while rescuing pedestrians.
