National spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Robbie Raburabu, on Sunday, confirmed the arrest of three Gauteng police officers in connection with a robbery incident at LM Cafe in Nigel last July.

According to Raburabu, the arrests were made as a follow-up to the initial arrests of seven other members of the police on July 28 at the Benoni police station.

His words:

“The three members of the Ekurhuleni crime intelligence handed themselves at the Nigel police station as per the arrangements with the IPID investigating team. They were then processed and detained. This brings the total number of members arrested on this case to 10.

“The charges preferred to the accused are two counts of theft, defeating the ends of justice and malicious damage to property. The above charges, as previously reported, arise from the incident on July 15 at the LM Café where these members and others stole cash amounting to over R200,000, about 152 boxes of cigarettes and stole a DVR (digital video recorder).”

The IPID Spokesperson said the arraigned officers are scheduled to appear before the Nigel Magistrate’s Court.

Last July, seven police officers affiliated with the Ekurhuleni Infrastructure Unit and Germiston Crime Intelligence were arrested and detained after investigations proved that they had unleashed terror in a robbery at the LM Café in Nigel.

Raburabu revealed in a statement that the seven officers had marched to the Benoni police station and voluntarily turned themselves in.
