A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Tuesday morning in Iriebe Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. Workers had reportedly resumed work on the site when the structure, still on its third floor, gave way.
Local government chairman, Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo, visited the scene and has since ordered the site closed pending investigation.
In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Ofonime Okon, Ihunwo expressed concern over the incident and required the building owner, still unidentified, and their site engineer to report for questioning on Wednesday. The chairman also called for verification of the building’s materials and approvals from the Ministry of Urban Development.
At the time of reporting, it remains uncertain whether there are casualties trapped in the debris.
