Tigray Rebels Deny Establishing Interim Government

The rebels of Ethiopia’s Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) have denied plans to set up a transitional government in the north in accordance with the peace accord agreed in November of last year.

According to a local news source, the TPLF had completed the process of creating a 28-member interim regional administration, which still required federal approval.

Getachew Reda, a TPLF spokesman, asserted that the Pretoria agreement’s parties would first confer with one another before establishing the interim government.

“Reports of the [transitional government] having been established in Tigray without Addis’ involvement flies in the face of reality. Tigray is only trying to do its part,” Mr. Getachew tweeted.

In order to guide the region as it works to recover from the devastating civil conflict, major political groups in the area have called for the establishment of an inclusive interim government.

The TPLF was accused of monopolising the process, so last month the opposition parties in Tigray boycotted a conference on the formation of an interim administration.
