President Bola Tinubu has stated that recent stampedes in Oyo, Anambra states, and Abuja, where persons died during the distribution of palliatives, were caused by a lack of discipline and inadequate planning.
Tinubu said that Nigerians should be more organised at these kinds of events in his first presidential media talk on Monday.
It is quite disheartening that people lack organisation. When Tinubu spoke on the tragic events that have claimed many lives, he remarked, “We simply need to be more disciplined in our society. Condolences to those who lost a home.”
Stressing the importance of helping the less fortunate, Tinubu recalled that he has been involved in charitable work for a long time and has never seen such an occurrence because it was well-planned.
“Giving is good. I have been distributing food, goods, and envelopes for the past 25 years, and because we are well-organised and disciplined, I have never encountered this type of situation. “And don’t even try to publicise it if you know you don’t have enough to give,” Tinubu said.
The Inspector General of Police has asked organisers of similar charity events to bring security agencies along and ensure strict adherence to crowd and safety management protocols after numerous stampedes in Anambra and the FCT on Saturday resulted in several fatalities and multiple injuries.
A few days before the events in Abuja and Anambra, more than thirty children were killed in a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
