President Bola Tinubu has refuted claims that he requested the resignation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Yemi Cardoso.
This clarification was made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. He dismissed reports suggesting that Tinubu had ordered Cardoso’s resignation.
Onanuga took to his official X handle to refute these claims, calling them a “bundle of lies.” He stated unequivocally, “It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign.”
The false report had claimed that Tinubu directed Cardoso to resign before leaving for China, despite efforts by prominent Yoruba leaders to retain him in the position.
Cardoso has faced criticism for his handling of economic challenges and efforts to stabilise the Naira. He was nominated by President Tinubu on September 15, 2023, and officially took office as CBN Governor on September 22, 2023. His appointment followed clearance from the National Assembly, succeeding acting CBN Governor Folashodun Shonubi.
