Togo Evacuates Jailed Coup Leader Kpatcha Gnassingbé to Gabon (News Central TV)

Togolese authorities have transferred a half-brother of Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé, jailed since 2009 over a failed coup attempt to a hospital in Gabon.

Kpatcha Gnassingbé, who suffers from diabetes was evacuated to Gabon due to his deteriorating health, Atta Messan Zeus Ajavon said.

Ajavon, who is a politician and the chairman of the Save Togo Collective said: “We have asked for his evacuation several times, because of the deteriorating state of his health. We appreciate this gesture.”

In 2011, the country’s Supreme Court handed Kpatcha Gnassingbé, the former defence minister, 20 years in prison for coup plotting against his half-brother.

He was detained in 2009 as he sought refuge in the US embassy in Togo’s capital, Lomé and has been in the military wing of a hospital in Lome since June 2021.
