'Top Gun 2' Surpasses ‘Titanic’ to Become 7th Highest Grossing Movie

Top Gun: Maverick’ has just surpassed ‘Titanic’ as the Seventh-Highest Grossing Release in Domestic Box Office History. The James Cameron’s disaster epic movie raked in $662 million domestically in ticket sales alone and $690 million internationally. In fact without playing in China or Russia, the blockbuster follow-up to 1986’s “Top Gun” has grossed $1.3 billion to date.

The high-flying sequel, which has been on a roll since its release in May, has now claimed the #7 spot in highest box office sales domestically … clocking in at $662 million in tickets sold, beating out James Cameron‘s 1997 classic by a good $3 mil or so at $659M.

The Tom cruise led film is pulling in audiences in a way that would have been monumental even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now standing close to reaching Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” record with barely a $16m margin, the film places at no. 7 in box office.

Beyond that, the list of the top five domestic releases ever consists of “Black Panther” ($700 million), “Avatar” ($760 million), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($804 million), “Avengers: Endgame” ($853 million) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million).

Decades after the Original, it’s great to see sequels surpass every expectation. Top Gun: Maverick, follows “Maverick” Mitchell as he trains a young group of aviators for a dangerous mission. The cast includes Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the first “Top Gun.”

This is a huge  achievement for both Tom and Paramount and this  proves there’s still most certainly a desire for people  to hit the Movie theatres since after the pandemic.
