Tottenham confirmed on Sunday that manager Antonio Conte had left the club “by mutual consent” with the squad failing to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

During a 3-3 draw against Southampton, the Italian, who assumed control in November 2021, went off on the team just before the international break.

Until the rest of the season, his assistant Cristian Stellini will take his place.

With two games in hand over fourth-place Newcastle in the fight for Champions League qualifying, Tottenham are only two points ahead of them as Conte departs with the London club in fourth place in the Premier League table.

“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place,” Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement.

“We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our club and amazing, loyal supporters.”

Earlier this season, Stellini filled in for Conte on the sidelines while the 53-year-old was recovering from gallbladder surgery.

Ryan Mason, a former midfielder for Tottenham, who served briefly as interim manager in 2021, will take over as assistant coach.
