A fire outbreak at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos State has destroyed property valued at millions of naira.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the fire occurred on Friday night.
He revealed that a preliminary investigation indicated that multiple buildings housing car spare parts shops were entirely gutted.
The statement reads: “Following distress calls received via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines at 10:20 pm, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency activated its Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
“Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Teams at the scene by 10:55 pm, it was discovered that several buildings used as shops for the sale of car spare parts were engulfed in flames at the specified location.
“The immediate or underlying causes of the fire incident had yet to be determined at the time of this report. However, properties and goods worth hundreds of millions of naira were destroyed in the blaze.
“The LASEMA Shark Response Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, LASEMA Tiger Response Team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service, collaborated to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
“Law enforcement agencies present at the scene implemented crowd control measures to ensure safety throughout the operation.”
Oke-Osanyintolu further confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported at the scene.
He noted that “dampening down” operations had commenced to extinguish remaining pockets of fire, and efforts to recover valuable properties from the affected shops were ongoing.
According to him, recovery operations and the complete extinguishment of the fire remain in progress.
