A devastating fire outbreak at Laranto Market in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

The incident occurred late on Sunday night, around 11 pm, after traders had closed for the day.

The Chairman of the market, Idris Shehu, confirmed the incident, revealing that goods in three major sections of the market—Timber, second-hand clothes, and furniture—were badly affected.

“We cannot yet ascertain the exact amount of money lost at this moment, the severity of the damage indicates that we have lost millions of naira,” he stated.

Umar Alyu, Chairman of the Timber section, expressed disappointment at the delayed response of firefighters, which he believes worsened the situation.

According to Alyu, it took the intervention of the Commissioner for Water Resources, who called in firefighters from the Government House, to finally bring the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire remains unknown as investigations continue.
