A tragic road accident along Kenya’s Kisumu-Nairobi road killed eleven persons in the early hours of Monday. The accident occurred in the Othoo area, eight kilometers from Awasi, Nyanza traffic commandant Allan Mwangi confirms.
Mwangi stated that it involved a minibus heading to Nairobi and a lorry approaching Kisumu.
Another vehicle, a Nissan, which was behind the ill-fated minibus also got damaged.
In total, 53 other people were evacuated to various hospitals with injuries.
“We lost 8 men, two women and a teenager,” he told the press.
Residents, emergency workers from workers and the police rushed to the scene to rescue those who were stuck inside.
They were rushed to Ahero sub-county Hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu. Corpses were deposited at Ahero sub county hospital mortuary.
“The wreckages have been towed to Ahero police station pending further investigations,” said Mwangi.
