Transport Crisis in Bungoma as a Result of Fuel Shortage

Bungoma town in Kenya, is experiencing serious transport crisis due to the severity of fuel scarcity that has hit the country.

This is happening as a result of the state’s partial withdrawal of a fuel subsidy that caused an immediate hike in diesel and petrol prices in various parts of the country.

Filling stations within Bungoma have been experiencing long queues, as motorists spend hours trying to access fuel, thereby crippling effective transportation. Petroleum dealers have blamed this development on a “mismatch in oil pricing.”

Majority of the motorists have expressed their frustration at the time and energy wasted everyday while trying to get fuel. They stated that it was quite challenging that fuel shortage was becoming more severe by the day, as only one filling station was dispensing within the whole town.

Some of the residents said that they are now being forced to source fuel from the neighbouring country of Uganda saying the petrol there is available and retails at a cheaper price per litre as compared to Kenya.

“We wonder why fuel in Uganda is readily available yet their fuel passes through Kenya before being destined to Uganda,” said Wafula.
