Trapped Nigerian Students in Sudan Await Evacuation to Egypt

Nigerian students stranded in Sudan are still waiting to be evacuated to Egypt despite promises of assistance from their home government.

The ongoing violence in Sudan has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people, leaving many foreigners afraid for their safety. Nigerian students who are studying in the country have become trapped and are currently unable to leave. Although the Nigerian embassy has pledged assistance in evacuating stranded citizens, these students are still stuck in Khartoum.

To evacuate 3,500 Nigerian students from Khartoum to Cairo, Egypt, the Nigerian embassy in Sudan has requested 200-seater buses. However, logistical issues have led to the postponement of the scheduled 6 am departure on April 25th to 12 pm. As at the time of writing this report, the students are still waiting in Khartoum.

Umar Abubakar, the President of the Jigawa State Students Association in Sudan, has reassured Nigerian students through a forwarded message that their return arrangements are being made and that they will be evacuated as soon as possible.

The ongoing violence in Sudan has been raging for over a week with deadly fighting breaking out between forces loyal to two rival generals. A humanitarian crisis has erupted as many are without food and water. The situation has resulted in the deaths of over 420 people and has caused thousands of injuries. As fighting continues, foreign nationals are being evacuated from the country. The Nigerian government, in hopes of evacuating their stranded citizens, has promised to use Luxor, an Egyptian town.
