In what can be described as a major victory for the Nigerian Army, the troops were able to successfully dislodge armed terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) who stormed Mafa town in northeast Nigeria.

The terrorists were battled in an operation that lasted several hours, with Nigerian troops killing over 100 terrorists in the early morning hours of March 19 as election officials and party agents were collating the results from Saturday’s polls.

The state commissioner of police, Abdu Umar confirmed it to News Central in a chat adding, “I think their major target was to disrupt the votes collation process and cause some havoc.”

According to reports, the terrorists had been terrorising the community for months, causing several deaths and the destruction of property. However, the timely intervention of the Nigerian Army has put an end to their nefarious activities.

Hours before the attack, elections in the dusty Mafa town experienced large voter turnout.

Governor Zulum on Saturday morning, travelled from Maiduguri to Mafa town, where he cast a vote at unit 006 Ajari for the ongoing gubernatorial and state assembly general elections. taking place in 28 States including Borno.

The Governor expressed delight with the smoothness of exercise at that polling unit.
