As South Africans battle heatwaves, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in Limpopo and Mpumalanga due to the intensification of Tropical Storm Filipo in the Mozambique Channel.

The storm has prompted a red alert from Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology, urging residents to take cautionary measures.

The South African Lowveld region is expected to experience substantial rainfall, particularly in southern Mozambique.

According to the service, a weak tropical low-pressure system is positioned in the Mozambique channel, between Madagascar and Mozambique.

However, in Gauteng, citizens are advised to prepare for high temperatures, which are anticipated to improve later in the week.

Tropical lows usually have lower wind speeds than tropical cyclones but can bring severe thunderstorms, wind and heavy rain.

Notwithstanding the prevailing hot spell, the focus shifts to the impacts of a potential storm in specific regions.

The weather services said it will continue monitoring developments and issue updates where necessary.
