Republican candidate Donald Trump has announced that he will not pursue a presidential run in 2028 if he is defeated in the upcoming November election. This declaration was made during an interview on the US news programme “Full Measure,” aired on Sunday.
When asked if he would consider running again in the event of a loss, the 78-year-old former president responded, “No, I don’t. I think that will be it. I don’t see that at all.” However, he expressed optimism about achieving success at the ballot box on November 5.
Currently, Trump is in a tight race against Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, particularly in critical battleground states that often play a decisive role in US elections. The Democratic Party has seen a resurgence in support since President Joe Biden stepped aside as their candidate in July, following a challenging debate performance against Trump.
Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden but has consistently refused to acknowledge his defeat, claiming the election was stolen and promoting conspiracy theories among his supporters. His unfounded allegations led to the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, as his ardent followers attempted to disrupt the certification of the election results.
In recent months, Trump has repeatedly declined to commit to recognising the outcome of the upcoming election unconditionally, leaving questions about his stance on electoral integrity unresolved.
