US President-elect Donald Trump announced late Sunday that he is reinstating hardline immigration official Tom Homan to manage the country’s borders in his incoming administration.
The 78-year-old Republican businessman has vowed to initiate the most extensive deportation campaign of undocumented immigrants in US history starting on his first day in office.
“I am happy to share that the former ICE Director and strong advocate for Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration as our Nation’s Borders overseer (‘The Border Czar’),” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“I have known Tom for many years, and there is no one more capable when it comes to policing and securing our Borders.”
Trump stated that Homan would be responsible for “all Deportations of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin.”
Homan, who directed immigration enforcement during part of Trump’s initial term, spoke at the Republican National Convention in July, addressing supporters: “I have a warning for the millions of illegal immigrants that Joe Biden has released in our country: You should start packing now.”
Trump will not be inaugurated until January and has only appointed one cabinet member so far. He named his campaign manager Susie Wiles—whom he nicknames “ice baby” for her supposedly calm demeanour—his chief of staff in the White House.
