US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he will not be reappointing two senior figures from his first administration, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that he “will not be inviting” either figure to join his new administration amid widespread speculation about the composition of his team.
Pompeo had previously proposed a hawkish approach to Ukraine in July, advocating increased arms transfers and tough measures against Russia’s energy sector, which analysts noted on Saturday contrasted with Trump’s own campaign pledges.
Trump has often claimed he could end the war in Ukraine within his first 24 hours in office and has criticised US support for Kyiv in its conflict with Russia.
Haley ran against Trump in this year’s Republican primary before eventually endorsing him, though she occasionally offered frank advice, such as urging him to “stop complaining” about Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in August.
“I greatly appreciated working with them in the past and thank them for their service to our country,” Trump wrote on Saturday.
So far, Trump has made only one cabinet appointment, naming his campaign manager Susie Wiles — whom he nicknames “ice baby” for her reputedly calm demeanour — as his White House Chief of Staff.
Wiles is the first woman to be appointed to this critical White House role.
