Tunisia held Denmark to a goalless draw in their World Cup opener at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan. Despite having numerous Premier League regulars, the Danes were put to the test in Group D.

Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in Denmark’s first game of Euro 2020 only last summer, was generally restrained, though he did draw a wonderful stop from Aymen Dahmen in the second half. Both teams had goals called out for offside, and Andreas Cornelius of Denmark missed from a yard away.

Referee Cesar Ramos examined the pitchside monitor over a potential Denmark penalty for handball in the 95th minute, only to stay with his initial ruling. He was overall consistent, having previously determined that a comparable occurrence at the opposite end involving Andreas Christensen was not a penalty as well.

Denmark, one of the pre-tournament favourites, will need to find some form if they are to advance from a difficult-looking group.  With holders France up next on Saturday (16:00 GMT kick-off), Kasper Hjulmund’s side’s task will only become more difficult. The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia will face Australia on the same day.
